Another summer lunch idea here! I’d mentioned a few weeks ago that I was running out of ideas for easy summer lunches for the boys. These Homemade Pigs in a Blanket are just the ticket!
My boys seem to ask, “What’s for lunch?”, right around 10am… we wake up early and they do swim team (must get energy out!) every morning so lunch can’t come soon enough for them!
Instead of trying to think of a new idea each day, and letting each boy pick out their own lunch, we are trying to have a plan and rotate though a set list of lunches. This actually cuts down on the time we spend getting everything ready and cleaning up because everyone’s eating the same thing.
We haven’t stuck to it 100 percent, but it does help to have ideas written down and ingredients on hand.
I made my own dough from scratch in my stand mixer, but you could make them even easier by picking up a bag of ready to use pizza dough (Trader Joe’s has a good one).
Adding an egg wash to the dough and a sprinkle of sesame seeds makes these extra delicious!
Let your kiddos help wrap the dough around the dogs. It’s a little therapeutic, like playing with play dough! They’ll enjoy eating their own creations that much more. Serve them with some carrot sticks and apple slices and you are good to go!
Until dinnertime of course… :0)

Description
These Homemade Pigs in a Blanket are the perfect summer lunch for your kiddos! You can make your own dough, or use a store-bought pizza dough.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons dry active yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons oil (I used olive oil)
- 2 1/2 – 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 12 hot dogs
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Instructions
- In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine yeast and warm water. When the yeast becomes foamy, add sugar, oil, 2 cups of the flour, and salt. With the dough hook attachment, mix on low until combined. Gradually increase the speed until a soft dough forms to medium high. Knead with the dough hook for about 7 minutes, stopping to add flour (up to one cup more). The dough should stick to the bottom of the bowl but not to the sides. It should be slightly sticky with no visible flour.
- Remove the dough from the bowl, oil the bowl, and place the dough back into the bowl. Cover and let rise for one hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Punch the dough down and roll into a log. Cut the dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into eight-inch pieces, and twist around the hot dogs. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- To make the egg wash, whisk one egg with one tablespoon of milk. Brush the top of each dough wrapped hot dog, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

My son requested pigs in a blanket and cinnamon rolls in the same day so I used this recipe and split the dough in half and made both!! They came out perfectly I will be using this recipe again and again. Thank you so much.

I read your review and did the same thing- cinnamon rolls were fabulous. Do you have any specific recommendations for them? I spread melted butter on the inside, sprinkled with cinnamon, touch of salt, brown sugar and raisins and then rolled them up. Placed them side by side in a butter dish and did egg wash- read some recipes that recommend a milk wash? Thoughts? Baked at 375F for about 30 minutes.

I’m new into baking with dough. I made this today as part of my R&D (I’m selling online food) and it was perfect! We loved it. I just wanna know if I can make the dough ahead of time and can be put in the fridge or freezer. If yes, how long is the shelf life? Thank you!

I’ve made this dough 3 times so far. First time with regular hotdogs. Second time with cocktail weenies and some cheese with the leftover dough. Third time I figured I’d try it as hamburger buns. Each time was phenomenal and it will be my to recipe for buns. Flavor and texture are exactly what I’ve been looking for without being overly dense or breast. Thank you for this wonderful recipe!

I’m looking for a recipe to make for my brothers BBQ business that he makes his own links. I do all the baking for everything from dinner rolls to cheesecakes for him. So he’s tasked me with finding a recipe for a dough I can make him to wrap his links in.. with that my question is can I make this ahead in the AM and refrigerate until he uses it later that day? Just thinking about slowing the proofing time for him to use when he’s ready. What do you think?
Gayle says
I think you forgot to include the one hour wait for the dough to rise in the total preparation time.
Cheers

Absolutely delicious and super easy recipe. I can wrap hot dogs, sausages in it or just make buns for hamburgers.
I sprayed some water on them after I turned the oven off . I love it! Thank you Julie!

Recipes was delicious, I was making minis so I cut everything by half (so I wouldn’t make extra dough), and put cheese and small pieces of jalapeños on them, they turned out amazing, my mother in law loved them. Even though I cut the Ingredients by half I still ended up having leftovers dough, since it pretty much the same as pizza dough I decided to make a small pizza with the left over dough, and it was delicious as well.

Excellent! Wonderful dough to work with! Made exactly as stated. Added some cheddar cheese inside perfect touch. Thanks for sharing!

I just got done making these. Went great, except I stuff mine with cheese and twisted the ends off to keep the cheese inside the dough. My first attempt ended up with cheese all over the pan. Lesson learned. Ooppss. But anyways, great recipe and informative.

Great dough recipe. I made it again yesterday and used (some of ) it to make a baked brie with dried cherries, toasted walnuts and agave nectar wrapped in your delicious dough. I sprinkled with flaky sea salt. Everyone loved it.

OMG!!!!! These are AMAZING!!!! The dough is tender and chewy with a slight sweetness to offset the salty smoked sausage I used. I highly recommend this recipe!!
